New Insurance Capacity Introduced as Security Concerns Intensify Along Critical Middle East Trade Route

Insurers are expanding protection options for companies moving goods through one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, reflecting growing concerns over geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.

A newly formed insurance facility backed by participants in the Lloyd’s market will offer dedicated protection for ships and cargo travelling through waters linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a route that handles a significant share of global energy and commercial shipments. Industry participants say the arrangement is intended to strengthen access to specialized coverage at a time when regional tensions have heightened risk considerations for vessel operators and cargo owners.

The facility will be led by Chubb and supported by multiple underwriting partners within the Lloyd’s marketplace. By combining underwriting resources through a single framework, the initiative seeks to provide brokers with greater flexibility when arranging protection for clients exposed to conflict-related maritime risks.

Available coverage will include protection for physical damage to vessels as well as liabilities associated with ship operations. Separate protection will also be available for transported goods. Collectively, the facility will make hundreds of millions of dollars in underwriting capacity available to the market, offering an additional source of risk transfer for businesses operating in the region.

The launch highlights the growing importance of specialist insurance solutions in maintaining trade flows through areas exposed to political instability. Shipping companies increasingly face challenges that extend beyond traditional operational risks, including the potential impact of military conflict, terrorism, piracy and other security-related threats.

Industry executives said the initiative demonstrates how insurers can combine expertise and capital to respond quickly when emerging risks create pressure on global supply chains. The new arrangement is expected to provide an additional option for brokers seeking coverage in a market where demand for specialist protection can increase rapidly during periods of uncertainty.

Coverage availability will remain subject to underwriting review, sanctions compliance requirements and regulatory obligations. Individual policy terms will vary depending on the nature of the voyage, cargo type and assessed exposure.

The development also underscores the broader role insurance markets play in supporting international commerce. As geopolitical events continue to influence maritime trade patterns, insurers are increasingly being called upon to provide solutions that help businesses manage uncertainty while maintaining access to critical transportation routes.

The facility became available on June 19 and is expected to serve shipowners, cargo interests and brokers seeking enhanced protection for operations connected to one of the world’s busiest shipping passages.
